As in most plays written since the second half of the 20th century, there is no clear genre classification. If one had to invent a genre label for this play, “Night of the Gods” could be described as a tragicomedy with elements of farce within political theater.
Gavran’s dynamic play about love, friendship, and power, full of unexpected twists that keep audiences breathless, has had as many as 19 premieres worldwide over the past quarter century—from Sarajevo, Maribor, Podgorica, and Mostar to Washington, Melbourne, Sofia, and Prague.
The play “Night of the Gods,” starring Lutkić, Ćetković, and Ilić, was directed by Marko Manojlović.
“One evening, on the tenth anniversary of their friendship, King Louis XIV (Ćetković), the court jester (Lutkić), and writer Molière (Ilić) drink together, recalling memories of times gone by. In the midst of the merriment, the king reveals that he has learned they are performing a farce about him in which they mock him, and he forces his friends to perform that farce just for him. The play puts its characters through trials that people have faced since living in communities: a man torn between the desire to do what he feels is just and the way he must live in the world, relating to those more powerful than himself. How the powerful are never certain of our love—whether it is sincere or merely out of interest. And whether the most powerful are still, in fact, people like the rest of us.”
