Public Institution Centre

The Public Institution “Mihailo Lalić” Cultural centre (Centre) was founded on May 6, 1993, by a decision of the Municipal Assembly of Andrijevica. The establishment of this institution followed shortly after the return of the status of a municipality in 1991, which created the prerequisites for the work of an institution of public interest that would enrich the cultural life of this region. Although the Center initially operated in limited conditions, it continuously developed, and experienced significant expansion in March 2008, when it moved into a modern building that today represents the center of cultural events in Andrijevica.
The Center houses a library (the successor to the reading room founded in 1892) and a cinema. Through cultural and sports sections, and the organization of numerous events, the Center has become one of the most respectable cultural institutions in this part of Montenegro.
The mission of the Center is to affirm the traditional and cultural values of the citizens of this area, based on the spiritual heritage of famous artists such as Mihailo Lalić, Radovan Zogović, Jovan Zonjić, Milo Stojković and others. Special emphasis is placed on supporting young talents and creating conditions for them to realize their dreams.
To achieve its goals, the Center cooperates with relevant cultural and sports institutions such as the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Sports and Youth, local government, the NGO sector and educational institutions.
The Center’s central event is the Days of Culture and Sports in Andrijevica, which are traditionally held every July on the occasion of the Municipality Day. This event, with its rich content, enriches the cultural and sports life of the local community and its guests and attracts numerous tourists every year.
Andrijevica Library
A Tradition of More Than a Century
The first reading room in the north of Montenegro, Andrijevica Reading Room, was founded on January 27, 1892, on Savindan, under the patronage of Prince Mirko. It was the second reading room in Montenegro, immediately after the Cetinje Library (1868). On the day of its founding, it had 40 members, including 12 illiterate ones – proof that awareness of the importance of books and culture was present even then. The reading room subscribed to several magazines, and the rules of its work were published in 1911 in “Glas Crnogorca”. Until World War II, the collection numbered around 14,000 books, but the war destroyed most of the rarities. Today, the library bears the name “Njegoš” and since 2008 has been operating within the Center for Culture and Sports, in modern premises that include a reading room, a depot and a hall for literary evenings. Current holdings: - 12,742 library units - 9,343 titles, classified according to the UDC system The library is actively working on increasing its holdings, organizing promotion and popularizing books.
